Sweet Red–1

1986 / 87, SF Camerawork, San Francisco
Performance / Video Installation: Red string, red ink, rice paper, monitor, VCR, videotape, light

A sewing needle with red thread was suspended at the entrance to the gallery. The artist sat at the other end of the room, a center slice of her body illuminated by a single light. She was eating a red thread. After some time, the artist rose from her seated position and walked across the room. Her left foot soaked in red ink, her left toe trailing a red string, she made footprints on the floor covered with white paper. The footprints became lighter and eventually disappeared as she left the room. Behind her chair, there was now a video image of the artis’s mouth, once again eating the red string.
