Continuous Thread

2002, Headlands Center for the Arts, Project Space program
A site-specific installation: 2 thousand + needles with red thread, 1 spool of red thread

In the center of the Project Space studio room, the artist, using a spool of red thread, drew a continuous doodling circle on the floor until it covered a square that had been scrubbed clean by the previous artist. Above this red thread covered floor hung a glass globe filled with a mass of red thread. Sewing needles appeared to be attached to the globe. From the needles, strands of red thread fell to the floor, ending in the center of the red thread covered floor. More than 2 thousand sewing needles also threaded with red thread were poked into the holes left on the wall by the artists who had used the space previously, composing a landscape on the wall. As viewers approached the wall, the air moved and tangled the suspended thread.
