1997–2003 23rd Ave. Wastewater Treatment Plant in Phoenix
Commissioned by Phoenix Arts Commission.
One of the 7 Permanent Public Art Installations: Cast acrylic, discarded
items from wastewater, sunlight
The project contains 7 installations: WATER (1 of 8–3 of
8), Reflection, Bubbles (4 of 8),
Bugs (5 of 8), Saguaru, Growing
(6 of 8), Rain (7
of 8) and the artist statement (8 of 8) in
the visiting center (the first and last stop of the tour) to complete
the recycle process. Each installation illustrates a major step in the
wastewater treatment process and comprises a stop along a public educational
tour of the facility. The first sculptural installation, WATER, is cast
acrylic and contains examples of the diverse and often unexpected objects
removed during the first stage of wastewater reclamation. A condensed
story of the cultures and living habits of the people in this area is
revealed through the objects floating in the acrylic. This sculpture is
a time capsule. (Each acrylic letter is 4.5' high x 4.5' wide x 1' thick)
