Support of Art

1996, R. Nelson Gallery, University of Calif. Davis
A Site Sensitive Installation: $ 2,000.00 in pennies, braided wire

This piece was created specifically for the Richard Nelson Gallery space. The budget of $2,000 for this exhibition was used to purchase 200,000 pennies. Each penny was punched and strung to create a total of 73 strands, each consisting of approximately 2,850 pennies. A single column of pennies was placed in the center of the gallery and physically appeared to support the ceiling. Once touched, the solid looking strand swayed like a pendulum. Additional strands of pennies, extending from floor to ceiling, were set against a permanent structural support column. Only three sides were covered due to insufficient funding (of art).
